What is the difference between voluntary and compulsory excess?

Depending on the vehicle and overall risk, some policies include a minimum compulsory excess. Additional excesses may apply for younger/inexperienced drivers.

If you’re buying a comprehensive policy, you can choose to add a voluntary excess. This amount is set by you and can help to reduce your premium. You cannot add a voluntary excess to a third party, fire and theft policy.

You can find your total excess amount on your policy schedule under ‘Your Excesses’. This will include your voluntary amount and any other excesses shown. You can view your schedule now  in your secure customer portal.
