Are keys covered if locked in a vehicle or broken in a lock?

Yes. If your keys are locked inside your car or property, or if a key breaks in a lock or ignition, you’re covered for up to £100 per incident towards the cost of gaining access or removing the broken key.

Will I get a replacement car if I can't use mine due to lost keys?

If your car can't be used because the keys are lost, stolen, or damaged, you can claim up to £50 per day for a hire car (such as a Ford Focus 1.6 or Peugeot 307 1.6) for up to three days. Alternatively, you can claim up to £50 per day towards reasonable travel expenses, also for a maximum of three days.

What happens if I’m stranded because of lost keys?

If you’ are stranded away from home due to lost, stolen, or damaged keys, the insurer pays up to £100 per day (for up to a maximum of £300) for reasonable travel costs so you can get home or continue your journey.

Are there any situations when lost keys wouldn’t be covered?

Yes. Key claims made within 48 hours of the start of the policy aren’t covered.

Claims will also be declined for the following reasons:

  • Claims in excess of the total limit of £1,500 per policy term
  • Any claims made within 48 hours of the start of the policy
  • Keys damaged over time by wear and tear or general maintenance of insured cars keys or locks
  • Losses reported to us after 30 days from the incident
  • Keys that are lost or stolen while in someone else's possession
