Are solar panels covered by home insurance?

Yes. The way solar panels are covered depends on the type of system you have.

  • Permanent solar panels that are fixed to your roof are usually covered under the buildings insurance section of your policy, as they're considered a permanent part of your home.
  • Plug-in or freestanding solar panels are usually covered under the contents insurance section of your policy.

If you have permanent roof-mounted solar panels, it's important to make sure your buildings sum insured is high enough to reflect the cost of rebuilding your home, including the panels.

If you have plug-in solar panels, cover will usually be provided under your contents sum insured or contents in the garden cover, depending on where the panels are kept and used. Please check your policy schedule for the limits that apply.

Cover is subject to the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of your policy. Please refer to your policy wording and schedule for full details.

Plug-in solar panels and safety

Plug-in solar panels are a great affordable option, but how do you check if your equipment is safe and legal?

  • Buy from a reputable UK retailer or the manufacturer, rather than an unknown online seller.
  • Check the product carries a UKCA or CE mark.
  • Follow the manufacturer's installation and safety instructions carefully.
  • Check it is sold as meeting the UK Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification.
  • Have a qualified electrician assess your home's electrical system to confirm it's suitable.
  • Use parts supplied or approved by the manufacturer and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions.
  • Regularly inspect panels, cables, and connectors for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration.
  • Check whether you need permission from your freeholder or local planning authority before installation.
  • Never connect panels using extension leads or multi-way adaptors, as these may overheat.
  • Make sure panels are securely positioned and installed.
