What is an excess?

An excess is the payment you make towards the cost of a claim. This is only for a claim for damages or theft to your own car.

In the event of any claim, all excesses applying to the policy will be deducted from your claims settlement.

Voluntary Excess
  • Comprehensive policy

You can choose to add a voluntary excess. This amount is set by you and can help to reduce the cost of your premium. Please ensure you set this to an affordable amount should you need to claim.

  • Third party, fire and theft (TPFT) policy.

You can't add a voluntary excess to a TPFT policy.

Compulsory

All policies include a minimum compulsory excess (as stated).

Additional excesses may apply:

  • Young or inexperienced driver
  • Applies if the driver at the time of the incident is under 25 years of age, has a provisional licence or has held a full licence for less than 12 months and will result in an extra £225 excess (only applies to accidental damage)
  • Vehicle (Endorsement 1)
  • Depending on the make and model of your vehicle this may attract a compulsory vehicle excess between £50-£400 (applies to accidental damage, fire or theft)
  • Locked garage (Endorsement 2)
  • If you've declared that your car's kept in a locked private garage overnight, each claim under Section 2 Fire and Theft that occurs when your car isn’t in a locked garage at or near your home between 10pm and 6am, will result in an extra £250 excess. (from loss or damage to the car arising from theft or attempted theft)
  • Thatcham Device (Endorsement 3)
  • If you've declared that your car has a Thatcham Category 1 or 2 Immobilising device or tracker device fitted, we'll require proof that the device is fitted to your car before we'll consider any claim under Fire and Theft or attempted theft.

All excesses which apply to you will be displayed in your quote results page.

Non-approved repairer excess

When you make a claim, we'll provide you with a choice of our approved repairers. If you choose to have the work carried out by someone who is not a 1st Central approved repairer, an additional excess of £250 will apply.

Windscreen excess

If your windscreen needs repairing an excess of £25 applies and £125 if it needs replacing.
