What is an excess?

An excess is the payment you make towards the cost of a claim. This is only for a claim for damages or theft to your own car.

In the event of any claim, all excesses applying to the policy will be deducted from your claims settlement.

Voluntary Excess
  • Comprehensive policy

You can choose to add a voluntary excess. This amount is set by you and can help to reduce the cost of your premium. Please ensure you set this to an affordable amount should you need to claim.

  • Third party, fire and theft (TPFT) policy.

You can't add a voluntary excess to a TPFT policy.

Compulsory

All policies include a minimum compulsory excess (as stated).

Additional excesses may apply:

  • Young or inexperienced driver
  • Vehicle (Endorsement 1)
  • Locked garage (Endorsement 2)

All excesses which apply to you will be displayed in your quote results page.

Non-approved repairer excess

When you make a claim, we'll provide you with a choice of our approved repairers. If you choose to have the work carried out by someone who is not a 1st Central approved repairer, an additional excess of £250 will apply.

Windscreen excess

If your windscreen needs repairing an excess of £25 applies.

If you have an Extra policy or a Connect policy, the replacement excess is £125.

If you have a Core policy, the replacement excess is £150.
