My car is a total loss, how do I let the DVLA know?

If your car is a total loss and our salvage company has collected it, you will need to let the DVLA know you are no longer the owner of the car. It is a legal requirement that carries a potential £1000 fine.

Letting the DVLA know about the change of keeper has benefits for you:

You can recover any unused road tax.

You’ll avoid any penalty charges given to the new owners if the car is sold.

You’ll need to provide the DVLA with the salvage company details. These will be provided on your claim settlement letter.

Unfortunately, we can’t do this your behalf, however, the process is straightforward and there are a couple of ways you can do it:

Online
By post

Complete Section 9 (or Section 6 if issued after 14/04/2019) of the Registration Document (V5c) and Post to the DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA.

If you haven’t received the salvage company details, please contact the Claims team as soon as possible.

Details of our opening hours and contact numbers can be found here.
